Knee High Day Care Cooperative

702 E. Cottage Grove
Bloomington, IN 47401
812-855-0150

As a cooperative, parents run Knee High, making it a family oriented facility. Membership is limited to families in which at least one parent is an IU student, staff or faculty member. Children ages six months to three years are eligible with a maximum enrollment of 12 children. The cooperative and participatory nature of Knee High offers the child the atmosphere of an extended family.

Schedule

Knee High is open 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday following the IUB academic calendar. Knee High is closed whenever IUB classes are not in session.

Program Philosophy

Children at Knee High learn through both child generated and caregiver directed activities. The philosophy is child centered with a play based curriculum that encourages positive social skills, self esteem, enhanced creativity, expanded language skills and cognitive development, development of physical skills, and an appreciation for diversity.

Staffing

Knee High is staffed by member parents and work study students. Each family is required to work 10 hours per week. Usually this is done in two five-hour shifts.

Classrooms

Knee High Cooperative is located in a house. We have 2 rooms for free play, a craft room and a nap room. Children at Knee High work in a mixed age group with, at most, a 1:4 staff to child ratio.

Meals and Snacks

Morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack are offered at regularly scheduled times. Breakfast is given to children if they need it. Parents provide their own child's food and drink for all meals and snacks.

Parent Involvement

Parent involvement and participation is the heart of Knee High. All program decisions are made by the parents at required monthly meetings. Parents staff the program and are required to work 10 hours per week at the center. In addition, each parent family has a designated job such as scheduling, new member coordinator, supply buyer, maintenance, etc.

Supplies

Parents supply diapers, naptime bedding, food and drink for their own children. Either cloth or disposable diapers may be used. Knee High provides all other necessary supplies.

Enrollment

Children of IUB students, staff and faculty, ages six months to three years are eligible for enrollment at Knee High. Prospective parents are required to complete an application. After an application is submitted, an interview is required before an offer of membership is extended. Current fees are $175.00 per month.

Knee High makes every effort to cultivate diversity in its many forms. Families and children with disabilities and from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. If you or your child has a disability and needs assistance, special arrangements can be made to accommodate your needs. Please contact our office at 812-855-0150 and ask to speak to Knee High's Indiana University Liaison for assistance.

Knee High requires a substantial time commitment. The monthly meetings and designated jobs can easily involve 5 hours per week in addition to the regularly scheduled 10 hours.

For more information on enrollment, talk to any parent on duty at Knee High at 812-855-0150.
